Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai Green Bus Review
May 20, 2018Amy Trumpeter
Today I travelled from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai with the Green Bus Company. I was surprised at how easy it was to get from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai by bus in Thailand. Travelling around Thailand is much more straightforward than I though it was going to be.
Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai Green Bus
The Green Bus runs at least every half an hour from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai. You are advised to pre-book tickets if you can. There are two options – get it the day before at the Green Bus ticket office (near to the night market, everyone will direct you where to go they are so helpful!) or download the green bus ap and book online. You can even use your UK credit card and it will tell you what the exchange rate is.
I booked the day before on the app and paid 129 baht for my ticket to Chiang Mai which worked out at £3.09! For a three hour journey, I’d say that was good value, wouldn’t you?
The people who run the buses will direct you to the correct place to board (currently number 12 or 13). People will direct you and everything is clearly labelled in English as well as Thai. It’s easy for solo female travellers.
As it is a three hour journey, I would advise that you use the bathroom and eat in a nearby cafe. I had pork dumplings at Connect Cafe. Grab some water and some crisps. Also have a jumper or light jacket handy Incase you get cold from the air con.
Your big backpack will go underneath and it is safe there, because all bags get checked in with a system and they will staple your bag ticket to your bus ticket so that you get the right bag back.
The bus terminal in Chiang Mai is slightly out of the city centre so you will need to take a taxi to your hostel. Download the GRAB ap and book through then so that you get a fixed price. Taxis are cheaper than tuk Tuks.
Many thanks to Elly Vos from the Ocean Bunkhouse for helping me with my journey!
I’m writing this blog from the bus and just about to arrive in Chiang Mai! Can’t wait to explore!
